Last month we packed our tyres and hit the road south to Coonawarra for “Sips in the Sticks” – a joyful long-table lunch at Bellwether Wines. Imagine five Barossa winemakers, five homemade desserts and a lot of retro 70s flair! We brought along our 2021 Single Vineyard Shiraz and a piece of home: Belinda’s family recipe for Malva pudding (a syrupy sponge cake from her Cape Town childhood). To our surprise – and delight – our Malva pudding took home the trophy for best dessert. It was a sweet victory for our team (and Daniel’s velvet outfit turned a few heads too)!

But beyond the fun and flares, the day had a deeper meaning. We chose the 2021 Shiraz for this event because that vintage was a rare moment of calm for us. Belinda shared how we had lost 50% of our Shiraz crop in 2020 to drought, and again in 2022 to unexpected hail. By contrast, 2021 “gave us a moment of calm and a reminder that resilience matters. Sometimes, nature rewards those who endure”. Pouring that bottle amid warm Coonawarra hospitality felt extra special – as did watching Katie Spain (the event host) ask us how we keep going. Our answer? Perseverance, passion and a good recipe, it seems!

This newsletter story is our way of sharing the celebration – complete with photos and the winning recipe – with all our fans. We hope it shows a playful side of The Cutting but also underscores what we believe: great wine is made by hands that’ve weathered tough seasons and still show up with a smile.
