More than a decade since the first Stone Well Shiraz, we’ve returned to where it all began, the original brushstroke, the cut in the hill that gave this place its name. This label carries the same earth, the same layers, the same story.
The Vineyard
The Cutting Vineyard is a hilltop site in the prestigious Stone Well sub-region. At 265 meters elevation with a moderate north-easterly aspect, the vineyard benefits from cooling south-easterly winds that provide relief during the peak heat of January and February.
The site features red sandstone peppered with buckshot ironstone over a limestone base of rock and schist. This diverse soil profile contributes remarkable complexity to the fruit.
Planted in 1998/1999, the vineyard has been meticulously hand-tended for over 25 years. Every vine is carefully managed to produce fruit of exceptional quality and distinctive Stone Well character.
The Vintage
After the extremely cool and wet season in 2023, 2024 was a return to resembling
a ‘normal vintage’ (if such a thing exists!) in the Barossa Valley.
After a dry winter and spring, above-average rainfall in December and January provided
strong canopy growth and set the vine architecture up well for the ripening months of
February and March. January was when the rain stopped, with over 50 days of no rain
through February and March and warmer-than-average conditions. These warm and dry
conditions made the vines work, although thankfully, the warm weather was consistent and
avoided the heat spikes, allowing consistent ripening.
The Winemaking
Hand-picked from the Stone Well vineyard.
Cold-soaked for three days to extract rich colour and flavour, then fermented in open-top fermenters with 10% whole bunches.
Basket-pressed directly into 225-litre seasoned French oak barrels.
Matured in oak for 22 months.
Bottled, waxed and labelled by hand, without filtration.
Only 150 magnums produced.
